As of September 1st, Intuit updated the QuickBooks Online Reports API, something that most QBO users won't notice unless their 3rd-party reporting developers have not adjusted for.
These changes go hand-in-hand with Intuit’s API is being updated as part of the QuickBooks transition of their product reporting from what was the classic view to the modern view.
The change does not affect people who work directly within QuickBooks Online but those who connect to it via a third-party solution. The upcoming change was first announced this past March, they had intended to roll it out in June, but that deadline was extended to September because many developers that use the API were not ready in June.
The revised API makes the modern reporting view available to developers. While developers won’t really change their API URL and body of requests, the API responses will change. This change impacts report formatting for API called Transaction Detail, Balance Sheet Detail, Sales by Customer Detail, Sales by Product/Service Detail, Invoice List, Vendor Contact List, Customer Contact List, Unpaid Bills, and Unbilled Charges and many more foundational reports accessible via the QBO API.
Developers must change and test their API calls ahead of the migration to ensure their own applications properly manage the results of the API calls they make. Developers who do not complete the migration could see reports that display the reporting data incorrectly. The change isn’t really about the actual data but more how the data is presented.
If developers using the QBO API have not adjusted to the new API, report columns might line up irregularly, rows could be relocated, account hierarchies might appear crowded, labels might change places, blank cells might be filled with zeroes, and call requests might not refresh properly
If you use any 3rd-party reporting solutions that make use of your QuickBooks Online data, you should immediately reach out to the solutions’ developer(s) to ensure that they have prepared for the QBO Reporting API switch. Otherwise, you may find that the reports you rely on ‘look like they were turned topsy-turvey as the winds of September blow in.
