The first results from Insightful Accountant's Audience Pulse survey show a profession that isn't moving in one direction. We asked readers how demand for their services compares with 90 days ago, whether new-client inquiries are rising or falling, and what's holding back their growth. The answers covered every possibility.
Demand is clearly uneven. One firm serving 10 or fewer clients said demand is stronger. A firm serving between 101 and 200 clients said it's holding steady. A practice with 25 or fewer clients said demand has weakened. The takeaway isn't that the market is booming or slumping, but that firm conditions depend heavily on niche, location, and client mix.
New-client inquiries look more encouraging. Most respondents said inquiries are increasing, including both the smallest and largest firms in the group. Even where demand felt flat or soft, prospects are still reaching out, which suggests opportunity for firms that are ready to convert and onboard them.
What stands in the way of growth depends a lot on the firm. A larger firm pointed to staffing, the familiar capacity problem facing practices that already have more work than people. A smaller practice that reported weaker demand named the economy as its biggest constraint. And one solo-sized firm gave an answer worth hearing: it simply doesn't want to grow. For many practitioners, a deliberately small, well-run practice is the goal, not a stepping stone.
The Audience Pulse continues each week through the end of the year, covering a different part of practice life each time. Watch for the next survey in your inbox, and add your voice so future results paint an even clearer picture of where the profession is headed.
